The Importance of Yoga Blocks: For a Safe and Solid Practice

Hello dear yogis,

I'm Işıl, :) Today I want to talk about yoga blocks, a subject that has an important place in my yoga practice but is often misunderstood.

I will clarify some misconceptions about yoga blocks, their role and importance in our practice, and when and how they should be used.

Yoga blocks are often seen as a tool only for beginners or those who have not reached a certain level. However, the truth is that yoga blocks are there to support the practice of yogis of all levels, taking into account our anatomical differences.

We, especially westerners, have a generally more rigid body structure than Indians and may need additional support in some poses. Therefore, blocks are critical for everyone to have a safer and more stable practice.

In the early years of my yoga journey, I was unfortunately reluctant to use blocks due to the guidance of inexperienced instructors. This caused me difficulty in practicing, especially due to the shortness of my hamstrings and my general body stiffness. For example, when my hands needed to touch the ground in a pose on the floor, I would force myself instead of using blocks, which would lead to unnecessary tension and an uncomfortable experience during practice.

Over time, I got to know my own body first by working with my own body and using yoga blocks in my own practice.

As I encounter different body types in my classes, I always prefer to use support for a safe and solid practice and I guide my students in this direction.

I learned through my experiences how important it is to whom I entrust my body, the trainings and guides I receive. I read, researched and made my practices safe and accessible by using blocks and other yoga tools in accordance with my body and yoga poses.

Yoga blocks not only provide physical support, but also help us relax mentally and emotionally. Using blocks during practice gives our bodies the space and time they need, allowing us to perform each pose more consciously and mindfully. This is in line with the yoga philosophy principle of ‘Ahimsa’—non-harming.

Finally, don’t hesitate to seek support in your yoga practice. Blocks are an essential tool for every yogi to develop a safe and sustainable practice that respects their own body. Remember, yoga blocks are the best friend of practitioners of all levels!

With love,

Işıl Ülkü – Lemon Tree Yogi
